Center Research

SCEHSC investigators convene in Research Program and Center Initiative working groups that are integrated thematically by a cross-cutting lifecourse approach to disease across multiple outcomes, and by foci on environmental justice and vulnerable populations based on comorbid conditions, sociodemographic and other disparities.

Cross-Cutting Lifecourse Approach

Shared molecular and biologic mechanisms of effects of environmental exposures may disrupt normal growth and development in early life, normal function during adulthood, and the rate of functional decline in the elderly.
Understanding adverse effects of exposures in susceptible periods and populations is critical to the equitable prevention of lifelong adverse health outcomes. Furthermore, exposure levels to multiple toxins are spread unevenly across populations and concentrated in vulnerable groups in Southern California and across the globe, resulting in substantial environmental health disparities. These issues motivate SCEHSC science and community engagement efforts.

Research Programs

Our support for innovative approaches to ongoing scientific and public health challenges of population exposure manifests through collaborations across six Environmental Health Research Programs. Health Outcomes Research Programs are united by studies on common exposures, biological pathways of effect and analytical challenges. With help from the SCEHSC Facility Cores, methodological advances in the Methods Research Programs are applied to ongoing studies across the Health Outcomes Research Programs.
